5 Star Movie Night: The Man With Two Brains – Champion Brewing, Tuesday

For this month’s 5 Star Movie Night we’ll be exploring the forgotten Steve Martin classic “The Man With Two Brains”. It’s a timeless tale of a very stable genius brain surgeon that has to chose between the woman he loves and a talking brain that he also loves, but kind of just met. That old chestnut. See you there!

Geeks Who Drink Trivia + Food Truck Night! – Vasen, Thursday

I know I get smarter after a few beers and I’m sure you do as well. Now’s your chance to prove it at Väsen Brewing Company. This week they’ll have Indo-Tibetan Food Truck in case you need to eat your feelings after failing miserably at trivia.

Join us every Thursday for Geeks Who Drink, a homegrown Pub Trivia Quiz modeled after those in Ireland and the UK. Hosted in cities across the country, Geeks Who Drink has “quiz masters” that visit local bars, breweries, and restaurants to facilitate the trivia quiz with several rounds of themed questions. Teams are limited to 6 members working together to answer each of the trivia questions covering everything from celebrities in trouble to wordplay to bad television.

If you want to play but don’t have a team, come anyway. We can easily get single players recruited onto an existing team. Winning teams get tons of RVA street cred and surprises along the way.

Artist of the Month Meet Up: Jordan & Kendall Moore – Three Notch’d RVA Collab House, Friday

Artists are cool and brewers are cool. Come check out the art of both at Three Notch’d Collab House.

Come on out after work on Friday Feb 2nd and meet our dual Artists of the Month, Jordan and his brother Kendall Moore.

Jordan and his brother grew up drawing together and while taking a few years off he’s rekindled his artistic spirit. Its brings him joy to know when his art makes an impression on someone he may have never met. It is the passion and his feelings at any given moment that gives way to his unique style.

Kendall is a VCU engineering grad who’s always enjoyed painting and art and decided to try designing on clothes. He’s got a little mix of everything and a style all his own. Come hang with the Moore brothers, pick their brains and get your last chance to purchase one of their works.

Game of Jokes, An Open Mic Comedy Battle – Castleburg Brewery, Saturday

BEER NEWS

Steam Bell boosts Midlothian brewing space – Richmond BizSense.com

Steam Bell Beer Works is adding 3,000 square feet of production space to its brewery at 1717 E. Oak Lake Blvd. in Midlothian.

The expansion will double the production capacity at the brewery, which siblings Brittany and Brad Cooper opened in summer 2015. It currently uses four 20-barrel tanks and is adding three 30-barrel tanks.

Richmond makes VinePair’s top 10 beercation destinations for 2018 – VinePair

We beat out the New York and Bejing. Playing with big boys.

Beer has blossomed in Richmond, and it’s time we all take notice. As the recently revamped Richmond Beer Trail will tell you, this Southern city is now rich with breweries. First there was Legend; then there was Hardywood; and now, more than 20 breweries have opened in the city itself, and 32 are in the area.

DRINK THIS

Mang Boy Tastee– The Veil Brewing Co, Tuesday

Tastees are kettle sour ales clocking in at 5.5%. We added a ton of lactose to these and brew them intentionally to be fuller bodied to try and replicate a fruit smoothie. We then select two different fruits and bomb them out in secondary fermentation at just shy of double fruited goses levels of fruit. For the second fruit blend in this series, we decided to use Mango and Boysenberry.

It’s seriously like an intense adult fruit smoothie. Incredible tropical and berry notes. Very nice acidity with some pleasant residual sweetness to balance it out. Thicker than a mug too! **PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF FRUIT IN THIS BEER AND THAT IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT THESE CANS REMAIN COLD AT ALL TIMES.** Shooting for approx 180-200x cases. $21+tax/4-pack. 1x case/6x 4-packs per person.

Whiskery Walrus Beer Release – Väsen Brewing Company, Tuesday

The final stout in the Walrus Series spent three months in whiskey barrels, imparting vanilla, oak and toffee. Smooth dark chocolate and ripe cherries round out this extremely drinkable winter beer.

Spring Pale Ale Release – Legend, Thursday

I think they’re jumping the Spring gun a bit but can’t complain too much about a new beer.

Join us as we welcome a new addition to our seasonal lineup! Our new Spring Pale Ale will sport a light honey color and a mild malty body with just a hint of caramel sweetness in this classic American Pale Ale. Hop aromas start out spicy/herbal and transition into lemon/lime and melon notes. The finish is smooth with a mild bite.

Our new Pale Ale crafted for the spring is the perfect partner for outdoor activities… easy to drink and simply uncomplicated.

ImREALLYdonewithU Release – The Veil Brewing Co., Thursday

ImREALLYdonewithU is the double dry-hopped version of the gnarliest offering in our 0 IBU series. Clocking in at 11%, this DDH 0 IBU Triple IPA is hopped intensely and equally with Citra and Mosaic like IdontwanttoBU and IdonteverwanttoBU. A true beast!

Shooting for 160-180 cases. $19.50+tax/4-pack. 6x 4-packs/1x case per person. *LIMITS SUBJECT TO CHANGE*

Proximity Project: Tart Cherry Sliced Release – Triple Crossing, Friday

Proximity Project: Tart Cherry Sliced. It will be on sale at both breweries on Friday, 2/2 at noon for $14.50 a bottle (4 bottle limit). There will also be draft pours available. Tart Cherry Sliced is the third vintage of our wild ale series and this time re-fermented on tart cherry. This ruby red mixed fermentation sour has lovely funky notes and a touch of sweetness and tartness. This golden sour was inoculated with a mixed culture of brewer’s yeast and native wild microflora from our brewery grounds in Fulton. We aged this golden sour on oak then re-fermented it on top of tart cherry in stainless. The beer and the wood it lives within, their simplicity and complexity, is at the core of the Proximity Project.

Sonic Flower Groove Double IPA Release – Final Gravity, Friday

The sun will shine bright for you this Friday when Final Gravity releases a brand new 8% DIPA – Sonic Flower Groove. A hop blend of Loral, Azacca, and Comet bring about a bouquet of floral, apricot, and citrus affections that will dance upon your palate like a star fruit surf rider. Available on draft and to go in Growlers and Crowlers.

RVA Beer Explorer’s Last Call

The RVA Beer Explorer is sailing off into the sunset but hopefully, you’ll like its fuzzy replacement.

The RVA Beer Explorer is throwing in his beer-soaked towel. The number of breweries and the beer scene of Richmond is awesome. Over the years for health reasons (nothing dramatic just self-realization about my intake) I’ve become less and less part of that awesome beer scene. As a result, I don’t have the passion needed to keep writing about beer every week so it’s time to say goodbye. RVAHub will continue to cover the big beer events and they’ll show up in their respective neighborhood areas or on the main site. We wouldn’t want you to miss out on some of the more unique events that pop-up.

Later today I’ll launch my new weekly post Critters of the Week. It will feature a picture and information about a wild animal spotted in the RVA area and an animal up for adoption by SPCA or RACC.

To my loyal readers out there I thank you for spending time with me each week and putting up with my many, many typos.
