Tabletop Tuesday Game Night – Väsen, Tuesday

I haven’t done the research but I’m pretty sure the majority of breweries in town offer one night a week in which they cater to the board gamer. Since I’m a board gamer I think this is a good thing. Väsen is taking it a step further and letting your roll a die to see what you’re discount will be.

Every Tuesday is now Tabletop Tuesday at Väsen! Starting at 3pm, you can check out one of over 20 games from our bar. Each player will be given the chance to roll dice to unlock drink specials. The harder the game you play, the better chance you have at a bigger discount. It’s that simple!

Depending on the game you’re playing, you’ll be given the chance to roll 20-sided dice to score a discount on your tab, with the number you roll corresponding to a discount.

Celebrate National Peanut Butter Day – ISLEY Brewing Company, Wednesday-Saturday

It’s important not to judge other people’s beer choices. So I’ll just say that peanut butter is awesome, beer is awesome, but I don’t find peanut butter in my beer awesome. The closest I’ve come to liking it was in Charleston at Edmund Oast Brewing where they served up a Peanut Butter and Jelly that was amazing. Those that want to enjoy peanut butter in the beer and not travel to Charleston are in luck.

National Peanut Butter Day is January 24th, and to celebrate, ISLEY Brewing Company is celebrating starting January 20th with TWO extra special peanut butter craft beers. First is a peanut butter infusion of our Blueberry Plain Jane Belgian White Ale. Loyal ISLEY fans have been asking for “PB&J’s” for years, which blends the Blueberry Plain Jane with our Choosy Mother Peanut Butter Porter. This version does not include any of our porter, and the result is a lighter, slightly sweeter, and softer PB&J experience. Also releasing that day is “The Fastidious Father,” our Banana Peanut Butter Porter.

To make the day even more special, we will be taking entries into a special PEANUT BUTTER BAKE OFF with great ISLEY Prizes on the line. All you need to do is bring by your best baked good recipe using PEANUT BUTTER as an ingredient between 12:00-2:00pm on Saturday, January 20th. Please make at least 2 dozen tasting sized portions for judging, which will be voted on by ISLEY customers.

Third Thursday: HandsOn Richmond – Veil Brewing Co., Thursday

It’s not easy to give up your hard-earned money in the brewery business but that’s exactly what Veil does every Thursday. The tradition of supporting local non-profits continues in 2018.

It’s a new year of giving back to Richmond! We had a great time supporting so many different local nonprofits in 2017 and we are doing it again! Every Third Thursday we will be giving 15% of sales from the hours of 5p-8p to a chosen local nonprofit. Every beer purchased on that night makes a difference in the lives of others here in Richmond. Thank you for your support and for being “People at the Center of Change!”

To kick off our Third Thursday New Year, we’ve chosen HandsOn Greater Richmond as our first nonprofit for 2018! HandsOn Greater Richmond is the best place to start when looking for volunteer opportunities. If you go to their website, www.handsonrva.org, plug in what kind of volunteer work you are interested in and HandsOn will team you up with a local need!

Beers, Burlesque, & Variety show RVA – Strangeways, Friday

2018 COTU Wort Share – Center of the Universe, Saturday

If you’re a home-brewer and have a brilliant beer in mind for Center of the Universe get ready to back up your barroom boasting. They’re holding a contest in which they give you the wort and you come back with a beer to be judged. Do it right and they’ll do a run of your beer. You’ll be Beer-Famous. There are rules so hit that link above to make sure you don’t run afoul and your epic beer is discarded before even starting.

Are you a homebrewer in the Central Virginia area? We want to share our wort with you! We will be producing a batch of wort and giving it away so you can produce your own beer to be judged by COTU staff and special guests. The winning beer will then be produced as a one‐off on a production level to be distributed throughout the greater Richmond region.

Date: Saturday, January 20th

Time: Mash in at 9:00am. Brewers 21 and up welcome to attend. Closed toed shoes required. Wort sharing begins at 1:30pm.

Betting on Manchester pays off for Twisted Ales Craft Brewing – RTD

I’ve been waiting 14 years for Manchester to take off like I’ve seen happen in Scott’s Addition. Still waiting but articles like this give me hope that the underappreciated area will soon see a serious revival.

All wasn’t certain as they sat in that parking lot: “We took a big bet on Manchester,” Debbi says. “It turns out it was a really good bet.”

Sherman thinks the building and the taproom attract locals and tourists alike, for the character, history and feel of the place: “Our taproom has a turn-of-the-century industrial vibe. The tap tower is a bit steampunk with pipes, pressure gauges, and an Edison bulb. The bar is topped with 20,000 pennies and fronted with tin ceiling panels and back-lit with colored light. The 120-year-old freight elevator has preserved graffiti left by members of a late-’70s Richmond-based band Single Bullet Theory. The original fire door and a door made of wood reclaimed from Secretariat’s barn are also fun features.”

Re-emergence of Private Idaho DIPA – Final Gravity Friday

It’s back and it’s hoppy and makes you happy. Head to Lakeside for this brew.

It’s been almost 4 months since we’ve stumbled upon this Final Gravity Double IPA unlike any other, but it surfaces again this week. Idaho 7, Simcoe, and Apollo hops fell into the water to bring you this alternate 8% DIPA that will put you into another state. Available in Crowlers.

Knight’s Watch, Chocolate Mint Stout – Castleburg Brewery, Saturday

Enjoy a Home Brew Collaboration, with Mike Crowley, and Castleburg Brewery and Taproom. This one is a Chocolate Milk Stout, with refreshing mint.

RVA Beer Explorer’s Last Call

The RVA Beer Explorer is sailing off into the sunset but hopefully, you’ll like its fuzzy replacement.

The RVA Beer Explorer is throwing in his beer-soaked towel. The number of breweries and the beer scene of Richmond is awesome. Over the years for health reasons (nothing dramatic just self-realization about my intake) I’ve become less and less part of that awesome beer scene. As a result, I don’t have the passion needed to keep writing about beer every week so it’s time to say goodbye. RVAHub will continue to cover the big beer events and they’ll show up in their respective neighborhood areas or on the main site. We wouldn’t want you to miss out on some of the more unique events that pop-up.

Later today I’ll launch my new weekly post Critters of the Week. It will feature a picture and information about a wild animal spotted in the RVA area and an animal up for adoption by SPCA or RACC.

To my loyal readers out there I thank you for spending time with me each week and putting up with my many, many typos.

JONNY Z FEST is in its 11th year, and we couldn’t be prouder to be part of this beautiful day celebrating the life of Jonny Zanin, a much-loved community activist who we lost far too early. In keeping with Jonny’s boundless energy for connection and mobilization of the creative spirit, the festival features local musicians, interactive art booths, play areas and kids’ projects, an amazing raffle, and the Bizarre Market, of course. Jonny was a champion of the market and organized market events for several years. Free to attend!
