RVA Beer Explorer Weekly Picks

RVA Beer Explorer Weekly Picks

We are definitely in the busy season for brewery fun right now. We’ve picked some of our favorites for the week. Cheers!!!

GO DO THIS

Rock Paper Scissors Tournament – Strangeways, Wednesday

Believe it or not, there is a strategy to winning at paper/rock/scissors. You can read all about it here but here’s a quick tip. If you take the big prize you owe me a beer.

Rock is the testosterone choice, the most aggressive and the one favored by angry players. The majority of participants in RPS tournaments are male (is this a surprise to anyone?). On your first throw against an inexperienced male opponent, the best choice is paper because that will beat rock.

Wild About Väsen – Väsen, Wednesday

Come join us for a night of mingling, wildlife trivia and some awesome prizes at Väsen Brewery in Richmond, Virginia! This ‘friend-raiser’ will focus on Wild Virginia’s mission and accomplishments to include a short presentation by Laurie Miller, Board Member; and a table set up with information available for potential volunteers and activists!

Fugly Sweater PartyJolly Jaunt Ashland Holiday Bar Crawl – Center of the Universe

First off the words about the sweaters.

Bring them out! Bring them out! Maybe your grandmother knitted it. Maybe your eccentric aunt gave it to you for Christmas. Or, maybe there was a huge sale on the mostly brilliantly tacky sweaters, and your employer thought they would make the perfect Christmas bonus. No matter how you ended up with it, its time to celebrate it in all of its glory.

Come rock out with the Something Shiny Band and wear your worst (best) sweater with the COTU Satellites on Friday, December 8th from 6-9pm!

You might as well keep that tacky sweater on all weekend because there is more holiday beer action on Saturday. Six restaurants are participating get all the details at the Facebook event page.

Jolly Jaunt Crawl: December 9th 7:00pm-10:00pm
Jolly Jaunt Passort Purcahses: December 6th starting at 4:00pm
Cost: $10
Attire: Festive! Tacky sweaters, santa suits, elves, tuxedos, etc. Be jolly inside and out!

The tracks are lit, our spirits are warming, and there is a nip in the air. That means it’s time to drag out your Christmas best and head into Ashland for the inaugural Jolly Jaunt! There are so many things happening that night, so hold onto your hats and try to keep up!

Basketball and Brews – University of Richmond, Saturday

College hoops and craft beers are something that local basketball fans of all types can enjoy both Rams and Spiders. This event though is Spider and JMU specific.

Prior to the Spider men’s basketball game versus regional rival JMU on December 9th, fans can participate in the season’s first Basketball & Brews event, presented by the University of Richmond School of Professional and Continuing Studies. The pregame festival located inside the Weinstein Recreation Center features craft beer tasting from seven local breweries.

The season’s first Brews event will feature selections from Legend Brewing Company, O’Connor, Devils Backbone, Midnight, Kindred Spirit, Bold Rock, and Hardywood (featuring the famed Gingerbread Stout)! The event will take place from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. with the game’s tipoff scheduled for 6 p.m.

To purchase a package that includes both a premium seat level game ticket and your beer tasting, visit www.RichmondSpiders.com/promo and enter the code: BREWS

Holiday Brew Ho-Ho – Hardywood, Sunday

Beer and books, not a combination you see very often but not only will there be books but there will be the actual humans that put words into books.

Chop Suey Books and Hardywood host a chill gathering of area authors! Music, beer, and a great line up of writers and artists! Get your copy of Richmond’s Culinary History: Seeds of Change and we’ll be happy to chat and sign.

Brunch – Triple Crossing, Sunday

I believe this is their first foray into an official brunch and all you really need to know is chicken and waffle pizza.

BEER NEWS

Broad St. brewpub answers call for expansion – Richmond BizSense.com

The boring news is that the Answer will take over the empty Banner Express for storage. The exciting news is deck times.

And The Answer’s loading dock will be converted into a 1,100-square-foot wooden deck.

“Our front door is actually in the back (of the building). That’s where the patio will go,” Bui said.

Triple Crossing one of the 10 Best Breweries of 2017 – Paste Magazine

This honor is given mainly based on the power of the brewery’s IPA production and since that is my favorite style you’ll hear no argument from me.

Their output in this field is nigh unparalleled. What’s ironic is that although Richmond has become a craft beer hotspot in the last couple of years thanks to other breweries such as The Answer and especially The Veil, many of the beer tourists coming to town still seem to be overlooking Triple Crossing, which is an absolutely criminal omission to make.

DRINK THIS

Dubbel Miles Release – Three Notch’d RVA Collab House, Wednesday

“Dubbel Miles”
Belgian Dubbel
ABV: 7.0%
IBU: 18
Collaboration w/ David Hunter

Dubbel Miles is a Belgian Dubbel brewed in collaboration with David Hunter of the Fans of Virginia Craft Breweries group. Our dubbel balances two key elements–malt and yeast. A variety of dark malts provide toasty, raison, and dark fruit characters and give the beer its deep red color. Belgian Trappist yeast develops fruity esters and light spicy notes through the fermentation process and leads to a fairly dry finish.

Barrel Aged Honey Ginger & Pale Wheat – Ardent, Thursday

We aged Honey Ginger in bourbon barrels for 6 months, layering bourbon and vanilla notes on top of honey sweetness and ginger spice. This big beer finishes so smooth that it’s easy to miss the high ABV.

Bourbon Barrel Aged Honey Ginger is available on draft and in 750 mL bottles to go. 11.5% ABV 18 IBU

Our Pale Wheat Ale was brewed in a similar style to our New England IPA. Double dry hopped with Azacca, El Dorado, and Amarillo hops, this one’s a crusher. Hazy, soft mouthfeel, low bitterness, big hop aroma and flavor.

Pale Wheat Ale is a draft-only special, with crowler & growler fills available to go. 4.8% ABV 10 IBU
