3 Day Bash to Celebrate 5 Years of Craft Beer – Center of the Universe, Friday- Sunday
At five years Center of the Universe can call itself one of the RVA Beer old-timers. Five years of great beer, expansion into new markets, the opening Origin Beer Lab, they show no sign of slowing down. To celebrate they’re planning a whole weekend of fun up in Ashland. Every day is packed with beer and beer related activities.
Day 1: Friday, November 17th
*The return of The Richard, our imperial IPA hopped up to the max! This “mistake brew” was the first brew we ever had on our system. We ended up boiling off 1/3 of the water, but hopped it like a full batch! The result is an ultra smooth, intensly aromatic West Coast meets East Coast IPA that makes it‘s return each year. The beer finished at 9.3% ABV with 85 IBU’s. It will be availabe on draft and to-go in growlers.
*We will also have live music from local favorite, The Tender, who opened up the brewery back in 2012 and have been coming back ever since. They pair perfectly with an ice cold beverage!
Day 2: Saturday, November 18th
*Oaky Pokey will be making its way back to the taps. We take our flagship IPA, Pocahoptas, and age it on white oak to deliver a creamy, tropical, and oaky flavor and aroma. The beer will be available on draft and to-go in growlers.
*Black Dawn, a one-off seasonal from 2016 will also be joining the party. This 7.5% black IPA is heavily hopped with Amarillo, Centennial, and Chinook which gives it a delicous orange and piny kick. The beer will be available on draft and to-go in growlers.
*Bee Generous Honey Ale is a graduate of Origin Beer Lab and developed by Ashley Ray. The beer is brewed with 5 gallons of orange blossom honey, which is then complimented by a generous portion of honey malt and 2-row barley. The result is a refreshing, brite, and delicious brew that clocks in at 6.2% ABV. The beer will be available on draft and to-go in growlers.

Twisted Crafts Ales announce distribution deal
We are extremely excited to announce we have signed a partnership agreement with Virginia Craft Distribution Company to bring our Twisted Ales brand to the marketplace throughout Virginia! We are ramping up our production and expect to be in your favorite bars and restaurants in the weeks to come.
The article doesn’t really answer the question it poses in the headline but it does have interviews with Garden Grove Brewer Michael Brandt and Center of the Universe Brewing Company co-owner Chris Ray.
“Distributors are getting bogged down, their portfolios are getting huge. They’re realizing that adding another brewery to their portfolios doesn’t mean they’re going to sell more beer, it means they sell less of what they already have,” Ray said.
That’s why The big name domestic brands like Budweiser and Coors still dominate the beer aisle, Ray says the stout competition has forced them to run lean and mean with lots of new offerings.
Hardywood Rum Barrel GBS Release – Hardywood Craft Brewery, Saturday
Hardywood Gingerbread Stout is an imperial milk stout brewed with vanilla beans, cinnamon, fresh baby Hawaiian ginger from Casselmonte Farm and wildflower honey from Bearer Farms. In this limited variation, Gingerbread Stout is matured in Caribbean dark rum barrels that lend a smooth, distinctive character, emerging 12 weeks later as Rum Barrel GBS. Enrich your holiday season with notes of gingerbread spice, subtly sweet molasses and a hint of brown sugar all wrapped up in this festive libation that warms the palate and the soul. 10.6% ABV

RVA Beer Explorer’s Last Call
The RVA Beer Explorer is sailing off into the sunset but hopefully, you’ll like its fuzzy replacement.
The RVA Beer Explorer is throwing in his beer-soaked towel. The number of breweries and the beer scene of Richmond is awesome. Over the years for health reasons (nothing dramatic just self-realization about my intake) I’ve become less and less part of that awesome beer scene. As a result, I don’t have the passion needed to keep writing about beer every week so it’s time to say goodbye. RVAHub will continue to cover the big beer events and they’ll show up in their respective neighborhood areas or on the main site. We wouldn’t want you to miss out on some of the more unique events that pop-up.
Later today I’ll launch my new weekly post Critters of the Week. It will feature a picture and information about a wild animal spotted in the RVA area and an animal up for adoption by SPCA or RACC.
To my loyal readers out there I thank you for spending time with me each week and putting up with my many, many typos.
