Let there be light, historical light, in Manchester

New lights could be installed that will reflect Manchester’s past industrial roots.

Ross of Good Morning RVA fame pointed out an interesting lighting project that is going on in Manchester.

Many of the streets in Manchester are in need of more lighting. City staff wanted roadway and pedestrian lighting fixtures that reflected the historic industrial character of the area. The only problem was that only one original light pole from that time period exists. That light pole is located at Belvidere between Cary and Cumberland.

Fortunately, staff was able to turn to the Valentine and two photos of the lights were found.

Based on those images and knowing that the new fixtures would have to on existing metal and wooden poles the city came up with the following.

Currently, this is only a proposal but if approved installation would begin mid-2018.
