A Filthy Fourth: a reminder to pick up your trash at the river, and everywhere else
People go to the James because they love how beautiful it is, yet they leave trash. This confuses us to no end.
There are three main types of people in Richmond when it comes to litter: those that litter, those that complain but don’t it pick up, and those that do pick it up. Which type are you?
If you’d like to become the type that picks up, follow RVA Clean Sweep for cleanup efforts throughout the city. Even better, go to Amazon, buy a picker-upper/grabber and go out once a week into the wilds of Richmond and pick up a little litter. Belle Isle and the rocks on the south side of the island always need a little help.
These pictures were taken today, July 5th, at the foot of the Boulevard Bridge (aka Nickel Bridge). Folks had found a lovely spot along the James to enjoy the fireworks at Dogwood Dell. It was considerably less lovely when they left. Not pictured are the two pairs of shorts, torn hammock, single flip-flop, and various socks.
So, my daughter and I took it upon ourselves to leave Southbank a little cleaner than we found it.
At least they stayed hydrated.

It took about 20 minutes of effort to collect what you see. The bucket on the left is mostly full of smashed cans.
