RVA Beer Explorer: Learning, O’Toole’s, Leprecrawl, Spelling Bee

Your weekly sip of the area’s suds news.

Let the pros at Final Gravity give you all the tips and know-how you need to get started on your brewing journey. We’ll go over cost effective ways you can begin extract brewing, all the tools you’ll need, some professional pointers, and you’ll leave with the motivation and knowledge you need to get to brewing. Live the dream and impress your friends! Who knows? Maybe, you’ll see YOUR beer on bottle shop shelves one day! Call 804-264-4808 or e-mail [email protected] to sign up. You can also get on the list right here at Final Gravity. $25 a person.

If you’ve never been to O’Toole’s (4800 Forest Hill Ave) for St. Patrick’s Day you need to make that your goal for this St. Patrick’s Day. This is what a St. Patrick’s Day should feel like. A pub crowded with neighbors and a few strangers with real beers on tap including of course Guinness. There will be a ton of music on both Thursday and Friday. The schedule isn’t posted yet so just go ahead and hit the previous link and “like” O’Toole’s on Facebook. One tip, I know it’s not traditional but O’Toole’s makes a damn fine burger if you need some food while enjoying the festivities.

Center of the Universe wins the “name your random St. Patrick’s Day event” contest with Leprecrawl 2017. Although at first glance I read it has Lepercrawl but that’s on me and my poor reading skills. This looks to be a fine excuse to head up towards Ashland on Friday from 4-10 PM.

Leprecrawl 2017: Two breweries, one great party! Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day the right way with special limited edition Irish brews at both Origin Beer Lab and Center of the Universe Brewing! Enjoy Irish inspired faire from Cultured Swine at Center of the Universe and a specially crafted Irish menu at Caboose, partnering with Origin Beer Lab. No blarney here, just good ol’ St. Paddy’s Day shenanigans!

The line between spelling and a typo has always been extremely blurry for me. Add a beer into my system and the line disappears altogether. If however spelling and beer are a winning combination for your gray matter I’d suggest that you head to Hardywood this Thursday for the Awesome Adult Spelling Bee. Not only will you get so show off your big brains, you’ll be helping kids, and of course drinking beer.

Thursday, May 18, 2017 from 4:30 PM7:00 PM

The Bee is a fun, lively event where teams compete to prove that spell check hasn’t ruined their ability to write. The winning team receives bragging rights, complete with a 38” trophy topped with a golden bee. Teams win awards for Team Spirit and Best Bee Costume. This year, we will also have special prizes for law firms & advertising agencies that make it the farthest in the competition!

RVA’s Hardywood Park Brewery hosts the Bee, which features raffle prizes, tasty snacks, and, of course, fantastic Hardywood beer! All of the Bee’s proceeds benefit Podium’s after-school programs for Richmond youth.
