RVA Beer Explorer: Ponies, Indonesia, Diversity, and Yacht Rock
I’LL TAKE A PONY AND A PINT
Ponies & Pints which features off track betting will open in the old Tiki Bob’s spot in Shockoe Bottom on Wednesday. Normally an OTB wouldn’t warrant a mention but this betting den will feature 60 beers on draft. Thats a lot of beers and you’ve got to figure some of them will be tasty craft beer. If anyone hits it up let us know and if you win we respectfully ask for a 10% cut.
HEAD TO HARDYWOOD FOR A BIT OF INDONESIA
The Music of Indonesia event at Hardywood makes our list simply because it’s total uniqueness. You won’t hear anything like this anywhere in Richmond while being able to partake in a beer beverage.

Join us on Sunday afternoon for a special showcase of traditional music and sounds inspired by Indonesia! The tasting room opens at noon with a selection of seasonal drafts, live music beginning at 3:00pm. The Return of the Mac provides the menu!
Gamelan Raga Kusuma
Gamelan is the prevailing traditional music of Indonesia and is and intricate blend of sonorities, structured and patterned in unique rhythmic and melodic systems. It is built largely on tuned bronze percussion, and often accompanies highly formalized dance. Gamelan Raga Kusuma is under the direction of Dr. Andy McGraw and practices weekly at the University of Richmond. They will be performing with guest dancers from the Indonesian Embassy.

Rumput is a collective of musician with diverse backgrounds in Americana, Balinese gamelan, jazz and experimental music. They play a style of music called kroncong /kron´• chong/ which is a string-band music of Indonesia. Kroncong combines the Western influence of the Portuguese sailors and their indentured African maritime laborers with the sophisticated Javanese rhythmic sensibilities for a striking hybrid. Rumput also uses a type of scrolling artwork called a cranky to accompany some of their songs.
