A bit of this, a sip of that. RVA Beer Explorer doesn’t hit it all but what it does is tasty.

CAPITAL ALE HOUSE OKTOBERFEST

Perhaps the last big Oktoberfest events going down in September are the Capital Ale House Oktoberfests. There is still the Richmond Oktoberfest so don’t panic.  On Friday, September 23rd, the Innsbrook location will be hosting a happy hour and German specials all day with music by Fritz’s Polka Band. On Saturday, the Downtown Richmond block party takes off.

On Friday September 23 get your fill of German style brews and brats outside in the Innsbrook Shoppes Courtyard for our Oktoberfest kick off party. Listen to live music from the Fritz Polka Band all the way from Verona, New York. The celebration begins at 5 p.m. and goes until 10:00 pm.

On Saturday, September 24 at noon will begin the block party downtown Richmond on Main street. Get your fill of German beers from Paulaner as well as locally brewed German style beers that can be poured in a signature Capital Ale House stein. Steins can be purchased for $4 and there is no cover charge to attend the celebrations.

Live music and entertainment will be performed by Low N Brows at noon, Johnny Koenig at 3:30, Fritz Polka Band at 7:30, and The Hirschjäger Dancers performing throughout the day!
“This year we researched and found the best Polka performances and are looking forward to them setting the tone as we kick off and celebrate our largest annual event, Oktoberfest!” –Matt Simmons, President of Capital Ale House

RICHMOND BREWERY TAKES THE CUP

The Wahoo Cup pits Richmond breweries versus Charlottesville breweries. Style Weekly has the details on the competitors and winner. Spoiler the winner rhymes with Stickingbole Beak Ferret Bake.

Sidenote we all do it but is it fair to call Lickinghole Creek a Richmond brewery? How close to the city limits do you have to be to be considered Richmond? From my house in Westover Hills it’s 36 miles to Lickinghole Creek and only 28 to Trapezium Brewing in Petersburg. If Trapezium wasn’t in the city limits of Petersburg could we claim it as a Richmond brewery? I’m not trying to make a greater point here just think it’s odd that a brewery 36 miles away is consistently called a Richmond brewery.

TRIPLE CROSSING SMASHING SUCCESS

On September 19th Capital Ale House Harrisonburg held the Virginia IPA Challenge and two locals took the top spots. I’ve had all but the Pacific Waves and you could throw a dart at these six beers and I wouldn’t have argued with the results. All excellent beverages and fine examples of IPA.

1st place: Triple Crossing Brewing Falcon Smash
2nd place: Extra Billy’s Brewery Citra Ass Down
3rd place (tie): Trapezium Brewing Company New England DIPA
3rd place (tie): Adroit Theory Brewing Company Single Hop IPA
5th place: Ornery Beer Company Pacific Waves
