Henrico Theatre Company opens its 47th season with singing nuns and corporate satire

Forty-seven seasons in, Henrico Theatre Company isn’t slowing down. The community theatre group, sponsored by Henrico Recreation & Parks, has announced its new four-show season, kicking off in September with the musical comedy “Nunsense.”

As the resident theatre company at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, the group will stage all four productions at the center. Season subscriptions are on sale now, along with individual tickets for “Nunsense.” Individual tickets for the remaining three shows go on sale September 28.

Nunsense

September 11-27, 2026

The season opens with Dan Goggin’s musical comedy about the Little Sisters of Hoboken, who find themselves in a bind after a bad batch of vichyssoise prepared by Sister Julia (Child of God) poisons 52 members of the convent. The five surviving sisters stage a variety show to raise money to bury the last four of their fallen sisters.

The Cricket on the Hearth

November 6-22, 2026

Marian Jonson’s play, adapted from the Charles Dickens story, follows toymaker Caleb and his blind daughter Bertha, whose hearth is home to a cricket said to bring good luck. This particular cricket is a peppery-tempered, interfering sort, but he’s willing to help Bertha in the most important search of her life: finding the secret of how to find the truth.

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying

April 30-May 16, 2027

This Frank Loesser musical, with a book by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock and Willie Gilbert, satirizes big business through the rise of J. Pierrepont Finch, who uses a handbook of the same name to climb from window washer to executive. Along the way, he contends with backstabbing coworkers, the office party, caffeine addiction, and true love.

July 16-August 1, 2027

The season closes with Philip King’s farce set in an English vicarage, where the vicar and his wife are overrun by a parade of guests: an American actress, a Cockney maid who has seen too many American movies, and four men in identical clergyman suits, one of whom is an escaped prisoner.
