G. Love, Donavon Frankenreiter and Moon Taxi roll into Innsbrook on June 18

Most concerts give you one band, maybe an opener if you’re lucky. The Rolling Together Revue Tour is built differently. When G. Love, Donavon Frankenreiter and Moon Taxi take the stage at The Innsbrook Pavilion on Thursday, June 18, the night ends with all three acts tangled up together rather than packing up after their own sets.

Here’s how it works. Moon Taxi plays a full set first. Then G. Love and Frankenreiter trade songs back and forth, swapping the spotlight while Moon Taxi backs them both. It’s the kind of loose, collaborative format that tends to produce the moments people talk about on the drive home.

Who’s on the bill

A quick look at the three names sharing the stage and what each one brings.

G. Love has been blending hip-hop, blues, funk and soul since 1993, when he got his start in Philadelphia. His sound, somewhere between slacker blues and alternative hip-hop, leans on 90s beats and classic blues rhythms with a laid-back vocal delivery that’s part rap, part bluesy croon. His 1994 self-titled debut on Epic Records carried the single “Cold Beverage,” which caught on with alternative radio and MTV and put him on the map.

The catalog since then runs deep, from Coast to Coast Motel (1995) and Yeah, It’s That Easy (1997) to The Electric Mile (2001) and the GRAMMY-nominated The Juice (2020). The 2014 album Sugar reunited the original G. Love & Special Sauce lineup. He’s played Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, and he’s a frequent collaborator with artists like Jack Johnson, who shares a similar easygoing wavelength.

Donavon Frankenreiter came to music by way of the ocean. Born in Southern California, he turned pro as a surfer at 16 and spent his early years chasing waves before trading competitions for concert halls. His music carries that same relaxed energy, all mellow grooves, reflective lyrics and soulful delivery. In September 2024 he released Get Outta Your Mind, his first studio album in nine years, timed to the 20th anniversary of his self-titled debut.

Moon Taxi rounds out the lineup. The Nashville indie alt-rock band put out its sixth album, Set Yourself Free, in 2023, a record that moves between rock, synth, pop and bluegrass. The five-piece (vocalist and guitarist Trevor Terndrup, lead guitarist Spencer Thomson, bassist Tommy Putnam, keyboardist Wes Bailey and drummer Tyler Ritter) wrote and recorded most of it themselves and put it out on their own label, 12th South Records. Fifteen years in, the band sounds polished without losing its appetite for wandering across genres.
