Gem and mineral show returns to Richmond this weekend under new local owner

If you’ve ever picked up a weird rock on a Virginia riverbank and wondered what it was, this weekend’s event at Richmond Raceway is basically built for you.

The Treasures of the Earth Gem, Mineral & Jewelry Show is back in Richmond April 24-26, and it’s operating under new management. Brad Polack, a local whose interest in geology started with hunting megalodon teeth in Virginia waterways as a kid, has taken the reins of the longtime regional favorite.

“I’ve always been fascinated by what you can find right beneath your feet, from shark teeth to incredible minerals,” Polack said in a statement. “Taking the lead on Treasures of the Earth is incredibly meaningful to me. I’m excited to continue its legacy in Richmond while creating an experience that inspires curiosity, learning, and a sense of adventure for all ages.”

What you’ll find on the floor

Vendors will be selling crystals, fossils, minerals, and jewelry sourced from around the world, with pieces ranging from affordable souvenirs to serious collector items. The Richmond Gem & Mineral Society is back again with an educational booth, which has long been one of the show’s anchors for families and anyone new to the hobby.

Richmond has a surprisingly deep bench when it comes to gem and mineral enthusiasts. Between the society’s decades of programming and a steady community of collectors, hobbyists, and educators, the city pulls a consistent crowd for shows like this one.

“This event is truly a gem for Richmond,” Polack added. “We’re bringing global treasures from around the world right here to RVA, while celebrating the incredible local interest and history that makes this community so special.”

The show runs at the Old Dominion Building at the Richmond Raceway Complex, 600 E. Laburnum Ave. Hours are noon to 6 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

Admission is $10 at the door and covers all three days, so you can come back as many times as you want. Kids 15 and under get in free.
