Hack for RVA a Civic Hackathon Happening in March
Unlike a traditional hackathon that centers speed or technology alone, Hack for RVA prioritizes people, place, and purpose.
From the Press Release
Richmonders are invited to come together March 27–29, 2026, for Hack for RVA, a civic hackathon focused on developing real, community-driven solutions to the city’s most pressing challenges.
Unlike a traditional hackathon that centers speed or technology alone, Hack for RVA prioritizes people, place, and purpose. The event brings together creatives, technologists, nonprofit and civic leaders, storytellers, and community members to work across disciplines and lived experiences.
In partnership with the City of Richmond, Hack for RVA is intentionally aligned with the seven pillars of Mayor Avula’s Action Plan:
- A thriving City Hall (that gets things done)
- Thriving neighborhoods (that meet our housing needs)
- Thriving families (where every child succeeds)
- A thriving economy (that leaves no one behind)
- Thriving and inclusive communities (where everyone’s rights are protected)
- A thriving and sustainable built environment (planned for future generations)
- A city that tells its stories (and tells the truth about its past)
The weekend culminates with teams presenting their solutions to city leadership, including the selection of a Mayor’s Choice Award.
“Richmond’s challenges are complex, and the best solutions don’t come from any one office or institution alone—they come from listening, collaborating, and acting together,” says Mayor Danny Avula. “Hack for RVA reflects the kind of city we are working to build: one where residents, community organizations, and innovators roll up their sleeves and help shape solutions that are grounded in lived experience and focused on real impact. I’m thrilled that we are partnering on this exciting and forward-thinking event.”
Mayor Avula will join the hackathon on Friday, March 27th for opening remarks and then again on Sunday, March 29th to hear the top 5 pitches and name the winner of the Mayor’s Choice Award. Awards will also be presented to one outstanding team from each pillar.
Hack for RVA is supported by community-minded partners like AI Ready RVA, Plan RVA, VCU School of Business, as well as the Office of Mayor Danny Avula and the City of Richmond. The event will take place at VCU School of Business – Main Hub, located at 301 W Main St, Richmond, VA 23284
