Richmond’s plant-powered Vegan Food Week & Restaurant Challenge returns January 20th
Vegan Action’s annual restaurant challenge runs six days, with more than 30 local businesses expected to participate and a portion of sales benefiting food access groups.
Richmond’s ninth annual Vegan Food Week and Restaurant Challenge, better known as V72x2, is scheduled for January 20th through January 25th, 2026. The event is organized by Vegan Action and invites area restaurants, cafés, and bakeries to create limited-time vegan specials not on their regular menus.
The challenge began in 2018 as a 72-hour event and expanded to six days in 2021, giving rise to the “72×2” name. According to organizers, more than 30 establishments are expected to take part this year, though a final list of participants and menu items has not yet been released.
During the week, customers can vote for their favorite savory dish and sweet treat. Winners receive plaques to display at their businesses. Past winning entries have ranged from veganized comfort food to desserts, including items from Idle Hands Bread Company, Soul N’ Vinegar, Ruby Scoops, Cobra Cabana, and Philly Vegan.
As in previous years, Vegan Action has partnered with Matchbox Mutual Aid, which will receive donations generated from the sale of participating V72x2 dishes. Matchbox Mutual Aid supports local efforts, such as RVA Community Fridges and Food Not Bombs, both of which focus on addressing food insecurity. Organizers did not specify what percentage of sales will be donated, which can vary by business.
Patrons will also be able to pick up a V72x2 Passport at participating locations. Those who collect stamps from five or more businesses can redeem the passport for a complimentary sweet treat from WPA Bakery at 3414 Semmes Avenue. The passport reward can be redeemed throughout February.
Additional details, including confirmed participants and menu offerings, will be posted on vegan72.com as they are finalized.
