University of Richmond to host annual candlelight lessons and carols on December 7th
Two evening services at Cannon Memorial Chapel will feature readings, choral music, and candle lighting.
The University of Richmond will hold its 52nd annual Candlelight Festival of Lessons and Carols on Sunday, December 7th, continuing a long-running tradition that is open to both the campus community and the public. The event will take place in Cannon Memorial Chapel at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Admission is free, and no tickets are required. Seating is first-come, first-served until the chapel reaches capacity. Doors will open one hour before each service, and prelude music will begin 20 minutes prior to each start time.
The program will include nine scripture readings delivered by members of the university community. Music will be provided by the University of Richmond Schola Cantorum, local organist Mary Beth Bennett, and accompanying brass musicians. The structure follows the historic “Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols,” first held at King’s College Chapel in Cambridge in 1918. Each service will conclude with candle lighting and a communal singing of “Silent Night.”
University Chaplain Rev. Dr. Craig Kocher said the event has become a significant seasonal tradition for many. “For more than 50 years, this grand Richmond tradition has offered grace and beauty to the campus community and to those in the wider region,” Kocher said.
Cannon Memorial Chapel is located at 134 UR Drive in Richmond. For additional details about Chaplaincy events, visit the university’s website here.
