Still Life Ceramics, a popular bi-coastal ceramics studio with locations in Los Angeles and Detroit, is bringing its creative spark to Richmond. The new 7,200-square-foot studio opens June 5 at 1600 Altamont Avenue in Scott’s Addition, answering a growing need in the city’s arts community for more accessible pottery spaces.

The Richmond location features 24/7 member access, beginner-friendly classes, and hosts private events. Studio manager Jess Gary, who relocated to Richmond in 2021, understands the local demand firsthand.

“Richmond has an incredible ceramics community,” Gary said. “But when I moved here, I was surprised at how much trouble I had finding a studio to work out of. Most studios had long waitlists or very limited hours. I ended up building a home studio, but I missed the creative energy of a shared space.”

Still Life Ceramics aims to fill that gap. The studio offers a variety of classes for all experience levels, including:

  • 4-week beginner and continuing wheel throwing

  • 4-week beginner and continuing handbuilding

  • A one-hour “Bowl-In-One” wheel class

For more experienced potters, memberships offer 24/7 studio access—something rarely found in the region. Members will be part of a shared space designed to foster creativity and connection among working artists.

The studio also opens its doors for private events such as birthday parties, bachelorette gatherings, and corporate team-building sessions.

Parking is available on-site. For more information about classes, memberships, and events, visit the Still Life Ceramics Richmond website here.
