Three Things to Kick About

  1. Henny Derby – The Henny Derby, a celebration of black culture and one of the country’s most slept on rivalries is the annual series of matches between the Richmond Kickers and Forward Madison. The Derby was created by  Featherstone Flamingos member Kyle Carr and River City Red Army member Elliot Barr. The contest achieved national attention this week with a pair of interviews on CBS Goalazo. Currently Forward Madison hold the cup.
  2. National TV – The game will be nationally televised on the CBS Sports Network and as a result the kickoff will be at 8 PM instead of the usual 7 PM. The game is being touted as a “red-out” and the first 2,500 fans will get a Red, White, and Roo t-shirt.
  3. No Rockets Red Glare – Due to the late kickoff the traditional 4th of July fireworks show is not going off this year. This will probably impact attendance and the dream of a packed stadium like we’ve seen for Ivy games will likely remain a dream.

There is a slight bit of optimism in the air after getting a PK win on the road. The “on the road” part is why my optimism is fleeting. The Kickers have played 4 games since June 15th, including a cross-country trip, and a “friendly” that resulted in injured Kickers players. Forward Madison have had more reasonable schedule recently. The other thing Forward Madison has going for them is their record. They haven’t lost a game this season, 5 wins and 4 draws put them in 2nd place in the league. The Kickers meanwhile are floundering back in 10th out of 12. The goal differential paints an even more dismal picture. The Kicker have a -6 goal differential while the Forward have a +12. According to my maths that a difference of 2 bazillion percent. The Kickers are one of 3 teams that have yet to walkout with a clean sheet. Similar to the Kickers, Forward Madison is depending on a wide variety of goal scorers but as already shown they’re doing it with much more frequency. None of this bodes well. As much as it pains me I don’t see a path to victory for the Kickers.
