Three Things to Kick About

  1. Jägermeister Cup, what is it? – The official line is: The USL Jägermeister Cup is an in-season, World Cup-style tournament that creates additional matches of consequences in the annual calendar. The tournament also includes non-traditional modifications to encourage attacking soccer, such as penalty shootouts to determine match winners during the group stage and goals scored as the first tie-breaker in the group standings. The USL Jägermeister Cup has dedicated matchdays integrated throughout the USL League One season. So far the matches have not been high-scoring and one of the few wins the Kickers have had this season doesn’t help us get into the playoffs because these games are in a separate bubble. A win on Saturday would be great to see but ultimately won’t help our goal of getting into the playoffs, which is more important. The team that wins their respective group and the other team with the highest number of goals advance to the next round. Currently the Kickers sit in 2nd in the group and have only scored 3 goals so lose out on the second spot.
  2. Back in Black – The Kickers released a 3rd jersey that will make it’s debut on Saturday. It’s black. It’s classic. It’s boring. It will sell well. I’m a grumpy old man. It will be on sale for $90.

  3. Emi – The Kickers social and Emi himself hinted at him at full training. What does it mean? If previous post are any indication, it means nothing. Will that stop me from wildly speculating that he’ll be back and score three goals? No, no it does not. Would love to see him even on the bench.

At the start of the season I thought Charlotte would be fighting for a top spot. So far that hasn’t happened. They are doing better than the Kickers but not by much. The have a 3 point lead on the table and as you’d expect that translates to 1 more win. The Kicker however have played 1 more game than Charlotte. Charlotte is coming off a draw while the Kickers have a little momentum with a win. Coming back to the Jägermeister Cup, coaches and front office folks will tell you this game is just as important as any other game and they go out win. If this was a movie, they’d break the 4th wall look us in the eyes and say, “It’s definitely not as important and my lineup and tactics will reflect this.” So it comes down to who wants this made up cup more. The Kickers are desperate to give the home fans a win. I think they will come out in full force at least for the first half. Unfortunately our secret goal scoring machine Billhardt will be running against the USL1 leader in saves Austin Pack. It won’t matter. The Kickers wasnt a home win, the fans want a home win, and Kickeroo wants a home win. A home win we shall all have.
