America’s Best Restaurants, a national media and marketing company that promotes local, independently owned restaurants, will bring its ABR Roadshow to the restaurant on February 26th. Popular dishes will be highlighted, along with an extensive on-camera interview with owner Sarabeth Hagan about the restaurant’s special place in the community. The episode will be aired extensively on social media channels at a later date.
With a fun, B-52s party vibe, SB’s Lakeside Love Shack opened in 2017 and became a destination spot for locals and tourists alike. Hagan, who planned to become a teacher but was making more money in the hospitality industry, notes that she saw a need in the area for a restaurant that brought people together and decided to open her own.
“[Lakeside] Is a very close-knit community,” Hagan says. “We all really look out for each other, and it was basically a food desert for the most part [before Love Shack opened]. And I lived here too, so I knew that’s where I wanted to open a restaurant.”
On opening day, Hagan sold cinnamon buns and chili for $5, cash only, and sold out. Her business grew steadily by word of mouth. During the pandemic they pivoted to takeout and delivery only, relying on catering orders and the customer incentive of offering toilet paper to every food order. Her staff stayed on, they were successful enough to remodel and expand, and added a bar.
Menu items are named after B-52 song lyrics, such as the hearty ‘Big As A Whale’ breakfast, which consists of three eggs, coffee, and a choice of meat, bread, and side. Lunch items can include the ‘I Got Me A Chrysler’ Chicken Salad Melt or the ‘It’s About To Set Sail’ BLT.
Hagan is proud of her open, love-based community eatery and says it’s where her heart and soul reside.
“The more you give, the more you get,” Hagan says. “What I tell my staff is: I don’t care what you are wearing [or] who is walking through that door; everyone is welcome here. It is such a cool vibe, and you can feel it. You can look around and see the diversity and see what everybody has to eat. It’s what brings you together.”
There is a second Love Shack location at 2600 Main St, which opened in early 2022.
America’s Best Restaurants will be filming on location on Monday, February 26th, from 2 pm to 5 pm EST. The press is invited to attend. The restaurant’s finished episode premiere date will be announced on their Facebook page and will be featured on America’s Best Restaurants’ website at https://americasbestrestaurants.com/rests/virginia/sbs-lakeside-love-shack.
