Although open for weeks yesterday was the official ribbon cutting for the new universal access at Huguenot Flatwater. City leaders and members of the James River Outdoor Coalition gathered at the ramp to celebrate the grand reopening. The ramp is only the second ADA-compliant ramp on this stretch of the James. The other ramp is much further downstream at Reedy Creek. The advantage of the Flatwater ramp is in the name. The flatwater will allow river lovers of all skill levels to access the river and enjoy what it has to offer.

James River Outdoor Coalition spearheaded the effort with a grant and pressure on city leaders. Councilperson Kristen Nye won the support of the City Council and the Mayor so that the project could be fully funded.

Statement from Mayor Levar Stoney

About a year ago, I joined JROC and PRCF at Huguenot Flatwater to break ground on a new universal access ramp. Today, we celebrated the completion of the ramp and I got to enjoy the river with some friends. Creating this kind of equal access to our city’s premier natural resource makes this investment priceless.

Prior to this project, this was the only access to the river at Huguenot Flatwater.
