Weekend Radar: Juneteenth, Kickers, Diamond Flea Market, Bumblebee Jamboree

It’s Juneteenth and Father’s Day so there is a lot going and we’ve picked our favorites.

All Weekend Various Times and Locations

There are way too many events to highlight just one. Here are some lists of various events going on in the area.

Kickers vs. Northern Colorado Hailstorm
June 11th, Gates 5PM Kickoff 6:30PM, Tickets

This will be the last time for a couple weeks that I’ll be picking the Kickers. The weather is looking perfect for catching some soccer and the Kickers are fresh off a decisive win.

The Richmond Kickers host Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC and are having our Black Heritage Celebration. A special Juneteenth inspired t-shirt will be available for purchase with all profits going to support Partnership for the Future.
At this game we are celebrating Juneteenth and promoting different black owned businesses and organizations in the Richmond area. Fathers are well-known to love a good bargain. This event happens every month but Father’s Day Flea Market means he can buy whatever he wants.
The theme for this month’s Diamond Flea Market is  “Dad at The Diamond.” You’ll be able to browse 100 vendors 75% of which will be Black-owned. , and in honor of Juneteenth, 75% of vendors will be Black-owned businesses. The Diamond Flea Market will showcase diverse goods and quality products from Virginia & Nationally based brands. With the objective to create a space that allows collaboration and fair brand-to-consumer-based commerce in all industries and avenues.
Church Hill Vintage Bazaar at 2305 East Broad St.
June 18th, 11AM-4PM
I’ve been to this one in the and what it lacks in size it usually makes up for in quality. Haven’t been (not sure if it’s gone on) in a few years so I hope that is still the case. If not you’ll be close to Proper Pie so get a pie and enjoy Church Hill.
June 18th, 10:30AM-2:30PM
People, especially children, often freak out when bees are near. This a great opportunity to learn how important these insects are and instead of being afraid when we see them we’ll cheer them on to more pollinating.
The Bumblebee Jamboree is a free, family event to kick off Pollinator Week. Come out to Maymont Park’s Children’s Farm and learn about, and celebrate, pollinators with Volunteer Master Gardeners. This event is hosted by the Chesterfield County Cooperative Extension office and Chesterfield County Master Gardeners.

Richard Hayes is the co-founder of RVAHub. When he isn't rounding up neighborhood news, he's likely watching soccer or chasing down the latest and greatest board game.

Weekend Radar: Kickers, RACC Yard Sale, Lavender Festival, Cars & Cuts

It hasn’t become Virginia hell-hot yet. Get outside and enjoy the calm before the roasting.

The COVID-19 Community Level remains high for Richmond, Henrico, and Chesterfield. The 7-day average case rates per 100,000 people in each locality are 270, 260, 247, respectively. CDC guidance continues to recommend that everyone, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in indoor public places. So we’ll be concentrating on outdoor venues.

Side note: I tested positive for Covid on Monday and have been isolating since then. Minor symptoms I’m assuming due to being full vaxed. Anecdotally I know of way more friends and family that have gotten Covid in the past month than during any time in the pandemic.

Cars & Cuts 2022 in Mechanicsville (7167 Flag Ln)
June 12th, 10AM-3PM, Free

I also wanted to have a cool car. Then for a little while I had a sweet 1968 Ford Galaxy. I quickly learned that unless you have mechanical skills you’re going to spend a lot of money. I don’t have a lot of money so I said goodbye to my sweet Galaxy. If you’ve got a sweet car or just want to be jealous of others this is the event for you.

It’s time for our favorite event of the year… CARS & CUTS 2022! This is a community car show and cruise in for all to participate in!

Every year we try to out do the year prior, and this year would be no different! We will of course the Mobile Barbershop up and rolling as well as the same great DJ and Amazing local Food / Shaved Ice Trucks but we’re also turning up the heat a in a few others ways this year:

1) There WILL BE plaques & prizes (FREE T-Shirt, FREE Haircut Gift Card, and a Cash Prize) given out to the top 3 Local Favorites! To enter your car/truck/bike to win there will be a $10 entry fee. You’ll get a car number card to put in your window and everyone in attendance will vote using those numbers!
– if you’re not interested in partaking in the show portion, you’re still welcome to join us for free and just cruise on in and enjoy the day! (You can bring your car and hang out for free, only those who pay the entree fee will get the window card and have the ability to win!) *** This is new this year so don’t be disturbed, we want you to bring your cars/trucks/bikes regardless!

2) In attempts to make the show a little more family/community friendly we will be having a limited amount of vendors on site selling local products! We will have vendors selling fresh squeezed lemonade and limeade as well as face painters and so much more!!!
– Vendor spaces are $30 and we’ve got about 10 spaces remaining! Please message the shop, or Jacob Smith Directly! PLEASE understand that because spaces are limited we’re going to do our absolute best to provide a broad spectrum of vendors without too much overlap!

3) PORTA POTTY 😂🤣 While we will still have access to the pavilion bathrooms like we’ve had every year, This year we will be renting 1 or 2 to place a little closer to the event to provide guests a little more comfort.
It’s going to be an awesome time, and we can’t wait to see y’all there! REMEMBER, this is a community event for all to enjoy so PLEASE SHARE & TAG EVERYONE to spread the word! Especially the “Car People” in your lives! If you’re apart of a local car group/club, we’d love to have you!

We’ve got access to the grass lot as well as the paved lot so there is plenty of space!!

Block Party at the Richmond SPCA
June 4th, 1-6 PM, Tickets are $8 before the event, $10 at the gate, and free for children 12 and under

I’m not a dog owner but I’m a big lover of the beasts and thankful for all the work that Richmond SPCA does on their behalf. If you are as well this is a great way to show your love and you’ll have a good time as well.

Twenty years ago, the Richmond SPCA boldly adopted a no-kill operating model and pledged to save the life of every healthy and treatably sick or injured homeless animal in our care. Saving thousands of lives while expanding our mission has been deeply rewarding work that we are eager to celebrate with our community. To that end, we invite animal lovers young and old to join us for a celebratory block party with a retro theme.

Hosted on the grounds of the Richmond SPCA, the day, presented by Moore Subaru will feature live music, beer/wine trucks, food trucks, special activities for animal lovers of all ages, and a variety of vendors in our pet-friendly marketplace. Join us for a fun celebration with a nostalgic vibe that takes you on a journey through time to remember the pop culture dominating your radio, CD player, television and closet 20 years ago.

Weekend Radar: Pow Wow, Stone’s 6th Anniversary, Grove Soccer Academy’s First Game, Squirrels vs Goats

This is Memorial Day weekend and in between heading to the pool party and barbecue take a moment to think about the reason for Memorial Day honoring U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces.

Well as predicted last week Richmond, Henrico, and Chesterfield all have high COVID-19 Community Level. 7-day case rates per 100,000 people in each of the localities are 274, 297, and 309, respectively (the threshold for a high level is 200). The 7-day rate of new COVID-19 hospital admissions per 100,000 people for the whole region is 10.5 (the threshold for a high level is 10). At this level, the CDC’s guidance for individuals is that Everyone, regardless of vaccination status, should wear a well-fitting mask indoors in public. As a result, all our recommendations will be for outdoor events while we watch to see how this latest surge plays out.

Grove Soccer Academy Inaugral Game at City Stadium
May 28th, Gates Open 6PM Kickoff 7PM, Tickets $10

The Kickers are down in Cary but I’m still going to suggest you check out some soccer. Grove Soccer Academy is a brand new team in town and plays in the NPSL. The goal is to help players develop the skills to make it up to the next level in the soccer pyramid. Bonus you can watch while drinking a nice cold beer. Who knows there could be a future USMNT player taking the field. They’ll be facing Virginia Beach FC so if you’ve got a VB connection that’s another reason to check it out.

Richmond Flying Squirrels vs. Hartford Yard Goats- Memorial Day Celebration and Fireworks
May 28th, Gates 5PM First Pitch 6PM, Tickets

Baseball seems like a pretty solid Memorial Day pick but c’mon the fireworks are a most excellent reason for attending. It won’t be as crowded as the 4th of July I can guarantee.

In-Your-Face Fireworks & Memorial Day Celebration
Kick off Memorial Day weekend and summer at The Diamond! Enjoy fireworks from up close and inside the fences after the game.
