Sports Backers has announced a new partnership with CarMax, making the Richmond-based retailer of used cars the title sponsor of the CarMax Richmond Half Marathon starting with the 2021 event on November 13. The event is slated to return to downtown Richmond in 2021, along with the VCU Health Richmond Marathon and Allianz Partners 8k. Registration is currently available at www.richmondmarathon.org.

“We are honored to be the lead sponsor of the CarMax Richmond Half Marathon and continue our longtime support of Sports Backer’s mission,” said Leslie Parpart, Director of Community Relations at CarMax. “We look forward to cheering on participants as they run past our new office being developed at the Sauer Center, scheduled to open later this year. We are excited to continue to grow CarMax’s presence in our hometown of Richmond and support events that enrich our community.”

2021 will mark the 14th running of the CarMax Richmond Half Marathon and it is consistently recognized as a premier fall race, earning accolades as a top U.S. half marathon from industry sources such as All About Marathon Training and Daily Burn. It draws participants to run Richmond and experience a flat, fast course, scenic neighborhoods, and first-class organization from registration through race day. Sports Backers plans to return the race to downtown Richmond with the traditional finish line at the intersection of 5th Street and Tredegar Street that offers sweeping views of Brown’s Island and the James River, with the flexibility to adjust race operations to follow the most up-to-date public health guidelines and promote participant safety.

“At Sports Backers, our mission is to inspire active living on a daily basis and create active living opportunities for residents and visitors alike,” said Jon Lugbill, Executive Director of Sports Backers. “The CarMax Richmond Half Marathon is a great celebration of our mission and the race festivities show off the best that our region has to offer. Celebrations are taking place throughout the area to celebrate the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.

Juneteenth is a holiday celebrating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. Originating in Galveston, Texas, it is now celebrated annually on June 19 throughout the United States and just earlier this week the Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would make Juneteenth, or June 19th, a federal holiday. The bill would lead to Juneteenth becoming the 12th federal holiday. It easily passed the House and was signed by President Joe Biden on Thursday.

Locally there are events all around the surrounding area. This is the list of those we’ve found.

Photos: Tyrannosaurs – Meet the Family at Science Museum of Virginia

If you have a child or adult with even a passing interest in dinosaurs this is a must-see exhibit.

Scotty the largest of the T. rex family is the star of the show.

T. rex is just one of more than 25 different tyrannosaurs! On Saturday, June 19, the Science Museum of Virginia opens “Tyrannosaurs: Meet the Family,” the world’s first exhibition showcasing the recently revised tyrannosaur family tree. Guests will see a dramatic array of fossils and casts of tyrannosaur specimens, run for their lives in a virtual experience, hatch a dinosaur egg and more in this immersive, multimedia exhibition that sheds new light on these ancient carnivores.

Avimimus Protentosus – An oviraptor, a group of very bird-like coelurosaurs close to the boundary between non-avian and avian dinosaurs.

Guanlong Wucaii – Greets you at the beginning of the exhibit. One of the first tyrannosaurs known and predated T. rex by 95 million year.

Besides the big skeletons, the interactive stations shouldn’t be overlooked. You’ll learn all about the impressive creatures that surround the room.

My personal favorites were these two guys.

Velociraptor Mongolensis -The exact look of the feathers are an educated guess. They do know it was feathered since the forelimb bones have been found with quill knobs, where the quills of feathers anchored to the bone.

The claws of the Velociraptor.

Dilong Paradoxus – The smallest of the tyrannosaur in the exhibition and decidedly the most punk rock.

Tyrannosaurs: Meet the Family will be at the Museum June 19 – October 3, 2021.

During regular Museum operating hours (9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.), admission to Tyrannosaurs: Meet the Family is available through a combination ticket that includes access to the exhibition as well as regular Museum exhibits.

  • Admission is $20.50 for adults; $18.50 for youth (ages 6 – 12) and seniors (ages 60 and older); and $15 for preschool-aged children (ages 3 – 5). Dome tickets are additional. Discounts are available for teachers, military personnel and through the Museums for All program.
  • Admission during Thursday and Friday extended hours (June 24 – October 1, 5 – 8 p.m.) for Tyrannosaurs: Meet the Family only is $10.
  • Museum members receive free admission to the Museum and this exhibition. Join today!

You can conquer the 52-mile Virginia Capital Trail three different ways this summer.

Published

on

The Virginia Capital Trail Foundation is encouraging people to get active this summer with the Capital Trail Summer Challenge. From now until September 6th, participants can run, bike, walk, skate, or dance their way along the Virginia Capital Trail, which stretches 51.7 miles from Williamsburg to Richmond.

The Summer Challenge consists of 3 different activity goals. Participants can crush all 51.7 miles of the Capital Trail, conquer 103.4 miles for an out and back, or complete the 310.2-mile Birthday Challenge in honor of the Trail’s 6th birthday. Each distance can be tackled all at once or completed in sections. The Summer Challenge is about conquering all 51.7 miles of the Capital Trail by passing every mile marker between Jamestown and Richmond. The remaining mileage can be logged anywhere, on the Capital Trail or somewhere new.

“We are hoping this event will inspire people to stay active this summer,” shares Cat Anthony, Executive Director of the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation. “We are excited to showcase all the different ways people can have fun out on the Trail. This challenge is unique because people choose their own activity and distance goal. There is something for everyone!”

After completing the challenge, participants will receive an official Summer Challenge t-shirt and sunglasses. Registration is $25 before the price bump on July 21st. There is also a fundraising option. Anyone who raises $100 will receive free registration. Proceeds from the challenge help support the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation.

Participants can submit their results any time before September 8th and are encouraged to share their experience on social media with #CapTrailChallenge. Additional information can be found at runsignup.com/Race/VA/Richmond/VirginiaCapitalTrailSummerChallenge

The Virginia Capital Trail Foundation is a non-profit organization that exists to protect, promote, and enhance the Virginia Capital Trail, and to serve as a resource, community builder, and connector to other trails throughout the Commonwealth.
