Zephyr United recently announced that the Richmond region has been selected to host the 2021 Beer Marketing & Tourism Conference (BMTC). The conference will take place February 23-25, 2021 at the Omni Richmond Hotel in Richmond’s Shockoe Slip Historic District.
“Richmond is a fantastic location for the Beer Marketing & Tourism Conference,” said Allan Wright, President of Zephyr United. “It has an outstanding beer scene and is actively engaged in promoting the region as a beer tourism destination. We are excited to be heading to Richmond in 2021.”
The Beer Marketing & Tourism Conference (BMTC) provides information and education regarding the growing functions and importance of beer marketing, tourism, event planning, and branding. The BMTC is regularly attended by breweries, brewery guilds, destination management organizations, tour operators, marketing agencies and media from around the country. The schedule of events for 2021 will include summits, presentations, and lectures from leading beer industry figures, including a keynote talk from Stone Brewing Co-Founder Greg Koch.
Craft beer tourism is a growing trend in Virginia, with the state calling more than 200 breweries home. Virginia is also one of six states where craft beer has grown the most, up 36% according to C+R Research. The Richmond region is home to nearly forty breweries and in 2018 was named “The World’s Top Beer Destination” by VinePair. Richmond Region Tourism encourages visitors to use the Richmond Beer Trail as their guide when exploring the craft beer scene in the area. After getting their map stamped at five breweries, Richmond Beer Trail followers are given limited-edition Richmond Beer Trail gear.

Little Nickel and Crossroads “Should” Reopen Next Week
Not back to normal but a step in that direction.
Two neighborhood favorites are set to come out of Covid-19 hibernation.

A little birdie told me that the announcement on Monday will be a Wednesday opening. Little birdies are known to be wrong but I trust this one.
Crossroads is not as precise. They’re planning for mid-July. Work is going on to complete a couple projects. Once those wrap up they’ll be pivoting to take out only for a bit.
Next week is mid-July so I’m hopeful that our favorite little coffee shop will be back in action.
No Kid Hungry Virginia offers families access to free meals for kids this summer via text message
The summer months are already one of the hungriest times of year for many children. The need will be even greater this summer with more than 10% of Virginians facing unemployment because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Free meal programs for children will continue to be available across Virginia during the summer. No Kid Hungry Virginia encourages families to text FOOD or COMIDA to 877-877 to find free summer food sites organized by school districts and community organizations.
Meal sites are offering a variety of distribution models to help safely connect students with meals and promote social distancing, including “Grab and Go” service and food delivery along bus routes while passing out multiple days’ worth of meals at one-time.
The summer months are already one of the hungriest times of year for many children. The need will be even greater this summer with more than 10% of Virginians facing unemployment because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent estimates show that as many as 1 in 4 children could experience food insecurity in the aftermath of this crisis.
“A big challenge is making sure families know how to find resources,” said Sarah Steely, No Kid Hungry Virginia Associate Director. “Please share the texting number with family and friends and on social networks, and check with your local school division for the most detailed information. We need to make everyone is aware of free meal resources in their communities.”
The Summer Meals program is funded by the USDA and operated by school districts and local organizations. Schools have been utilizing the Summer Meals program to operate emergency meal sites throughout the pandemic. Families can text FOOD or COMIDA to 877-877 and type in a zip code to find nearby summer meal sites, along with operating days and times. No application or registration is required at sites.
Summer hunger can have a long-term impact on a child’s health, ability to learn, and general well-being. No Kid Hungry Virginia is focused on providing funding and strategic assistance to schools and local organizations implementing summer meal programs to help them reach more kids during the pandemic.

The Veil pumps the brakes on highly-anticipated 18-vendor Scott’s Addition food hall
The project is yet another victim of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It looks like Richmond won’t get its first food hall after all. At least not in The Belleville, the one slated to open in Scott’s Addition this year, which was touted as the first in Richmond.
Neighborhood Restaurant Group, an Alexandria-based restaurant group, announced in October its plan to open a 25,000-square-foot food hall (a kind of fancy food court) at 1509 Belleville St. Called The Belleville, the project was set to feature roughly 18 food vendors, three bars and a brand new taproom for The Veil’s Brewing Co.
But alas, due to the impact of COVID-19 on most business sectors, the restaurant group has canceled the project.
