Grand Illumination Changes Name and Location, RVA Illuminates at Kanawha Plaza on Friday

Trip the Light Santastic this Friday as the RVA Illuminates counts down the lighting of downtown.

RVA Illuminates (formerly the Grand Illumination) is moving to Kanawha Plaza at 801 E. Canal St., this Friday, Dec. 6, at 5:30 p.m. The move was required because the relatively new (2017) owners of the James Center, William H. Goodwin Jr.’s Riverstone Group, didn’t want to host the festivities any longer. The city’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities have stepped in as the host this year.

Kick-off the holidays with Mayor Stoney, 8News, 103.7 Play, NO BS Brass Band and many other special guests. City lights go on at 6:00 pm. Free shuttle service will run from City Stadium to Kanawha Plaza starting at 5:00 pm, the last shuttle returns at 9:00 pm.

Don’t worry, you’ll still be able to get the perfect selfie or family picture at the James Center. The massive tree and the herd of light-up reindeer will be back.

At roughly the same time the 17th Street Market, 100 N. 17th St., will be hosting it’s own illuminating event. Shockoe Illuminates is on that same Friday, Dec. 6th, from 5 to 9 pm. Shockoe Illuminates will feature countdown the lighting of the city with live stage performances, a visit from Santa, and Holiday Vendors to help you start your holiday shopping. What will be missing this year is the ice skating rink that was in Shockoe Bottom last year. No city-run rink is happening.
