Byrd Theatre Foundation announces the 5th annual Big LeBYRDski Festival 2019 November 8–9

The annual fundraiser pays homage to the classic Coen brothers’ 1998 cult film The Big Lebowski, with the screening of the movie as well as a weekend of festivities including a bowling party, bathrobe bar crawl and after-party.

The Byrd Theatre Foundation, Richmond, and presenting sponsor Center of the Universe Brewing Company (COTU), Ashland, will host the fifth annual Big LeBYRDski Festival November 8-9.

The annual fundraiser pays homage to the classic Coen brothers’ 1998 cult film The Big Lebowski (starring Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi and Julianne Moore and directed and written by Ethan and Joel Coen), with the screening of the movie as well as a weekend of festivities including a bowling party, bathrobe bar crawl and after-party.

“This Dude-themed weekend is the result of many hours of our Big LeBYRDski planning committee. They have worked hard to bring this weekend to life and help Richmond become one of the biggest East Coast’s Big Lebowski Festivals and the largest in Virginia.”  says the Byrd Theatre Foundation board president Ted Haynes.

In addition, Haynes says, “The Byrd Theatre is committed to bringing innovative programming that serves the community and supports of our mission to expand the big screen experience, celebrate the art of cinema and preserve Virginia’s grand motion picture palace, and the Big LeBYRDski Fest does just that.”

This year’s Big LeBYRDski Festival features two days of activities celebrating all things “Dude,” the character Jeff Bridges plays in the movie. Festivities start on Friday, November 8, 7:30 -9 p.m., with a Bowling Party at River City Roll, the boutique bowling alley off the Boulevard adjacent to Scott’s Addition.

The Festival continues on Saturday, November 9 with a Bathrobe Bar Crawl (bathrobes are another movie reference) through Carytown starting at 5 p.m. at Xtra’s Cafe, 3322 B W. Cary Street. Next, the screening of The Big Lebowski at the Byrd Theatre, 2908 W. Cary Street, at 8 p.m., doors open at 7 p.m. The evening wraps up with an After Party at Citizen Burger Bar, across from the theater, featuring the band Talk to Plants. Festivalgoers can enjoy COTU’s specially crafted brews El Duderino and Donnie, created in honor of the film.

Bowling teams filled up quickly this year and are sold out. VIP movie passes are still available and include spectator tickets to the Bowling Party Friday night, a ticket to the movie, the Bathrobe Bar Crawl and After Party and will receive a free t-shirt and other swag. Movie-themed costumes are encouraged at all festival events. Prizes will be awarded.

All proceeds of the festival support the mission of the Byrd Theatre Foundation: to expand the big screen experience, celebrate the art of cinema, and preserve Virginia’s grand motion picture palace.
