The Richmond media community lost a TV legend Wednesday night when it was announced that Robert Griggs, better known as “Sailor Bob” from his local hit children’s television show, passed away.
Griggs began his career at WRVA-TV, which later became WWBT/NBC12, as a cameraman and then weather forecaster. He then became the host of the kid-friendly “Sailor Bob Show,” a program that aired twice daily and its peak and was completely unscripted, with Griggs often drawing on a marker board and ad-libbing with puppet Gilly the Gull. The show ran from 1959 through the 1970s, captivating a generation of Richmond kids.
Griggs, who was born in Church Hill and most recently resided in Chesterfield County, was 85.
