Weekly Food News: Three pizza joints, another opens, silent reading parties, and National Margarita Day

This week, we take a look at the three pizza chain locations that have left us, preview one that opens Friday, and give you the scoop on silent reading parties and where to partake in National Margarita Day.

All the news that’s fit to eat

Chicago’s Pizza With A Twist opens Friday in the West End – A new-to-Richmond pizza outfit, Chigaco’s Pizza With A Twist, will open by week’s end, according to the RTD’s Karri Peifer. The chain carries traditional pies as well as unique offerings such as chicken tiki masala, palak paneer, and curry veggie pizza. The new owners have largely kept the space as-is from when it was Big Al’s Sports Bar & Grill, minus all the local and national sports team banners (RIP Big Al’s – my go-to spot to watch Alabama games… Roll Tide!). Here’s a look inside and more on the menu.

Meanwhile, three area pizza chains shut down – As the aforementioned new chain pizza restaurant comes to town, three others in the area recently closed their doors. Ledo Pizza & Pasta in West Broad Village, Extreme Pizza on the VCU campus, and Grimaldi’s Pizzeria at Chesterfield Towne Center were all shuttered. My theory? There are just too many new (and great) local, wood-fired pizza joints popping up, and the chains that are coming to town are better than what we’ve had before. Here’s the scoop.

Silent reading parties provide a social event for the anti-social – Are you one of the many folks who loves grabbing a drink and reading at the bar? A silent reading party might be just the thing for you! It’s exactly what it sounds like. You go to the bar, order your cocktail, and settle in with a good book. No talking. Organizer Sarah Choi is hosting another event in March at Urban Hang Suite RVA, the April event at Virago Spirits, and the May event at (soon-to-open) Bateau. Here’s how you can take part.

Celebrate National Margarita Day Friday at Casa Del Barco – This Friday, February 22nd is National Margarita Day, and what better place to celebrate than at Casa Del Barco, which has twelve different varieties on the rocks (my favorites are the jalapeño and the cucumber basil) and six frozen options? Check out the full menu below and make your way to Casa Del Baro either on the Canal Walk downtown or at Short Pump Town Center. Here’s the full rundown.
