An uncharacteristic early season snowstorm blanketed the area with upwards of a foot of snow or more throughout the day and evening on Sunday, bringing the city to a standstill into Monday morning.

City of Richmond government offices, VCU, the University of Richmond, and all area schools are closed, along with many area businesses and restaurants. NBC12 has the full, updated list here.

Richmond’s official total came in at just about 11.5 inches, which makes this storm unprecedented for a December event. Across the area, totals of up to 13 inches were reported (the highest Richmond-area total being in Short Pump).

From NBC12:

Main roads are passable to clear, while neighborhood roadways are completely covered with snowfall in many situations. VDOT and local crews are working on 12-hour shifts to clear roadways, and authorities tended to hundreds of reported accidents Sunday and Monday. Police ask citizens to keep travel to a minimum until conditions improve.
