Shockoe Stout – Brunswick Stew Festival, Lickinghole Creek, This week
The official release of Lickinghole Creek’s Shockoe Stout is right around the corner! Enrichmond’s Brunswick Stew and Stout festival on Saturday, October 27 from 11am-4pm in Shockoe Bottom will headline the beer, and it will hit the taproom and shelves in the week leading up to the festival.
The Shockoe Stout is a highly drinkable stout at 5.5ABV, giving it a lighter finish than typical darker fall beers. Virginia hops and red cedar are added in at the end of the brewing process, creating a fresh, wintery flavor. It’s a perfect beer for fall festivals and firepits, maintaining the richness you expect from Lickinghole Creek’s award-winning stouts.
Shockoe Stout will be available in four packs of 16 oz. cans from local retailers such as Ellwood Thompsons and Union Market, as well as throughout the state in Total Wine. It will be on tap in local restaurants and bars throughout the winter, especially in Shockoe Bottom, and in Lickinghole Creek’s Shockoe Bottom taproom.
Our next seasonal sour release is ready to go! We’ll be pouring glasses to enjoy in the taproom and selling bottles to go beginning Thursday, October 25.
Fall American Sour Blend is a copper colored, medium bodied blend of sour blonde ale and Brett IPA. This is a dry, balanced beer with light acidity and a funky characteristic from the Brettanomyces. Aged in neutral oak barrels, this complex blend will continue to age well in the bottle as long as you can hold off opening it.
Join us this Thursday and every Thursday for new beer releases from the RVA Collab House with Pint Specials from 4-7pm. Check out this week’s release from RVA Head Brewer Willey Broaddus:
“1 in 7”
Hazy IPA
ABV: 7%
IBU: 15
Collaboration with United Way
“1 in 7” Hazy IPA is bursting with citrusy, melon flavors from the heavy use of Amarillo hops. One hop, seven percent ABV. This beer was specifically designed to bring attention to those numbers. Our collaboration partner, United Way, is an organization focused on creating community-based solutions to strengthen the cornerstones for a good quality of life. One of those cornerstones is education, and 1 in 7 children do not have the resources to start school with proper literacy skills in the Richmond area. United Way works tirelessly to try to bring that number down to zero. Find out how you can help at www.yourunitedway.org.
TWO incredible beers release this week from Final Gravity!
Star Castle DIPA:
The defenses have been obliterated so there’s nothing standing in the way of you and this next level 8% Double IPA. Brewed with Nelson Sauvin and Citra hops, you’ll experience a quenching bouquet of tropical mango and citrus with a bit of spiciness to keep things interesting. This game moves quick, so don’t sleep on this one.
Astral Plane IPA:
Inside this ethereal new IPA, you’ll find an insane amount of Galaxy hops with the essence of clean citrus, passionfruit, and peach. Though it may seem mysterious – with the first sip, it’ll feel like you’ve known it from another life. Experience it for yourself by the glass, crowler, or growler…you’ll be together on the Astral Plane.

When his gang, the Nerdlucks, heads to Earth to kidnap Bugs Bunny (Billy West) and the Looney Tunes, Bugs challenges them to a basketball game to determine their fate. The aliens agree, but they steal the powers of NBA basketball players, including Larry Bird (Larry Bird) and Charles Barkley (Charles Barkley) — so Bugs gets some help from superstar Michael Jordan (Michael Jordan).
This is a free and family-friendly event! Join us on the West Creek lawn for a fun evening of an outdoor movie paired with a great beer!
WC FOOD TRUCK: 1. Smokery Pl.
This is a brewery I don’t give enough credit to. Their beer has steadily improved and they host a ton of local groups. Great to see them hit their 6th Anniversary.
We’re turning six!!! Come celebrate the entrance into this new year of Castleburg Brewery with us!
-We’re bringing back our Six Fingered Man Sour Ale w/ Blackberry and Lime! Get it? Six Year Anniversary? Six Fingered Man? We think we’re clever.
*Six Fingered Man is heavy on the malted wheat and a big helping of milk sugar giving this 3.3% ABV sour a full body. Our signature kettle souring technique and the addition of both blackberry and lime provides an approachable tartness and fruity finish. Prepare to… drink.*
-We will also have cider! Our friends over at Old Town Cidery of Winchester, VA will have their Pippin hard cider on! This cider is a single varietal of the Ablemarle Pippin, an apple grown by Thomas Jefferson. More of a fine wine, with a sharp, dry finish. 6.9% ABV
-Big Fundamental will be performing in the taproom at 7pm, with Midnite Taxi and Whitney & the Saying Goes
BEER NEWS
Seems like this would be a no-brainer but I guess it needs to be said out loud.
Dahmer, Kemper, Gacy, and Ramirez collectively killed at least 80 people. The horrors they committed are only a generation behind us—Kemper is still alive in prison in California—and victims’ families are constantly retraumatized by the continued commodification of these killers’ likenesses. To take these figures’ legacies of violence, sanitize them, strip them of context, and turn a profit is to delegitimize the suffering they’ve caused.
Beyond these very good reasons to not use a serial killer’s face to sell any product, craft beer has all the more reason to avoid this kind of marketing. This is an industry that, exactly a year ago, experienced a large-scale reckoning where dozens of people came forward with stories of sexual misconduct and abuse. The Murder Box stands as a signal that, despite any progress made in the past year, there are still sections of the beer industry that remain untouched and unconcerned.
If you’re a cool kid and have one of those record-playing thingies you need to head over to Fulton. You can get giant musical discs and beer.

We are excited to welcome the Summer Moon Music Festival back to our Biergarten, and with it comes our oh-so-refreshing Summer Moon Imperial Wheat Ale. Brewed with fresh lemon zest and hundreds of pounds of raspberries, this big beer brings tons of tangy fruit flavor!

As always, this event is FREE, RAIN or SHINE event! Supervised, well behaved children and dogs on leashes are welcome to attend the festivities!
Don’t try to actually crush the sun. First off it’s too far away and second, it’s way too hot. You’ll burn your fingers. The final reason for not crushing the sun is you don’t want to piss off Huitzilopochtli the Aztec God of war, sun, human sacrifice, and the patron of the city of Tenochtitlan.
Crushfest 2022 is back! Welcome warm weather and days spent outdoors with Suncrush at Hardywood West Creek Crushfest.
We will have a full day with:

A provisional-use permit proposed for the restaurant and the larger Kingsland Marina would limit live music to certain hours and decibel levels, among other conditions that county staff is recommending after determining that the expanded restaurant had outgrown the parameters of a previous permit.
Three Notch’d Brewing Co. is planning to expand its space at 2930 W. Broad St. to include the addition of a restaurant, according to documents filed with the city. The extra room came available after two adjacent spaces were recently left vacant by Red Goat Pizza and Richmond Wine Station.
I know recommending anything beer, related taking place on Cinco de Mayo is a crapshoot. I’m confident that this is a solid bet and there won’t be anyone from Bingo dressed in culturally inappropriate garb.

After Russia invaded Ukraine, a Lviv craft brewery with the name of Pravda stopped making beer and started brewing Molotov cocktails.
Soon after, the brewer called on fellow brewers around the world to show solidarity with Ukraine by brewing one of Pravda’s beers for charity. Pravda, which is the Russian word for “truth,” made that possible by posting its recipes online.
Several Richmond craft breweries have joined the “Brew for Ukraine” initiative, which aims to raise money for humanitarian relief through sales of the beer and to call attention to the plight of Ukrainians.
