Thanks to one local car salesman, a Vietnam War-era veteran now has a reliable mode of transportation he so desperately needed.

Tom Baskin – top salesperson at Henrico’s McGeorge Toyota – regularly works with various veterans’ affairs organizations – most notably Paralyzed Veterans of America. Through his work with PVA’s local chapter, Baskin heard about America’s Mighty Warriors and a local veteran named David Winchell that was in desperate need of a car.

After winning McGeorge’s Salesperson of the Month Award, which grants each month’s top salesperson $5,000 to donate to the charity of their choice, Baskin, a veteran himself, reached out to Winchell to see how he could help. Just days later, Baskin, with the help of his colleagues at McGeorge Toyota Pre-Owned, had found a reliable used Toyota RAV4 that was a perfect fit and used his $5,000 to get Winchell into the driver’s seat.

In the weeks since receiving the SUV, Winchell said he has made several trips to North Carolina and feels like he has a huge weight off his shoulders now that he doesn’t have to worry about getting around town.

Baskin said he’s just happy to have the opportunity to make an impact with those who have sacrificed so much.

“In the many times I’ve won Salesperson of the Month, I always choose to work with veterans,” he said. “I’m so glad to have been given this opportunity to help those who have done so much to make all of our lives better. It’s really the least I could do.”
