Weekend Event Picks: Festival of the River, Friday Cheers, Napoleon at the VMFA, and the Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Fest

A one-time-only festival celebrating the mighty James and the great outdoors takes place this weekend, the Richmond Raceway Complex gets boozed up, Napoleon opens at the VMFA, and more this weekend.

Friday Cheers on the downtown riverfront –  This year, Friday Cheers will be partnering with “Festival of the River;” a three-day music and arts festival celebrating the James River and the Chesapeake Bay. The greater festival will feature bands, art installations, and educational events, but the Friday Cheers component features hometown heroes No BS Brass Band followed by nationally acclaimed, Grammy –winning artist Rhiannon Giddens (better known as the lead singer of the Carolina Chocolate Drops). Both artists will perform alongside the Richmond Symphony Orchestra. Friends, this is a can’t-miss show! Tickets are just $10. More info in our show preview here.

Festival of the River on Brown’s Island – This weekend, a one-time-only festival celebrating our mighty James River, great music, art, and more will take place on Brown’s Isand–it’s the Festival of the River. This week’s Friday Cheers performers will take part alongside the Richmond Symphony, and there will be art installations on the bridges leading to the island. Expect other activities including a river cleanup, oyster shucking, and much more focused on the great outdoors. The festival takes place Friday through Sunday. Friday evening’s admission is $10 (due to Friday Cheers), but Saturday and Sunday’s events are free to enter (with donations encouraged). More here.

“Napoleon: Power and Splendor” opens at the VMFA – The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts will present Napoleon: Power and Splendor, an inside look at the intricacies of Napoleon’s Imperial Household and the role it played in shaping the Emperor’s image to expand his political and military power and social influence, beginning this Saturday. Napoleon Bonaparte (1769–1821) was one of the most powerful and historically influential European emperors between the Renaissance and the 20th century. More than 200 works of art — many of which have never before been shown in the United States — are included in this international loan exhibition that will be on display at VMFA from June 9 to Sept. 3, 2018. The exhibition is free for VMFA members, children ages 6 and under, active-duty military personnel and their immediate families; $16 for adults, $12 for seniors 65 and older, and $10 for youth ages 7-17 and college students with ID. Learn more and purchase tickets here.

Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Festival – If you’re a bourbon fan like me, this is the place to be on Saturday. The Richmond Raceway Complex will host a beer sipping, bourbon tasting, music listening, and barbeque eating extravaganza known as the Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Fest. Your admission includes sampling glass so you can enjoy an all-you-care-to-enjoy sampling of beer and bourbon. Some of the best barbeque vendors are on-site if you get hungry, all while enjoying seminars in the tasting theater and live music all day. Trust me, you’ll want a designated driver for this one–no ifs, ands, or buts. Tickets start at $39 and are available online.
