Weekend Event Picks: WWI and Going Places museum openings, Jason Isbell in concert, and Lunar New Year celebration

Check out two big museum exhibit openings at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture and the Science Museum of Virginia, enjoy live music from Jason Isbell, celebrate the Year of the Dog at a Chinese Lunar New Year event, and more this weekend.

Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit at the Altria – Two-time Grammy Award winner Jason Isbell and his mighty band The 400 Unit have announced 2018 tour dates bringing them through the Midwest and Eastern U.S. in January and February. Their new album The Nashville Sound was released in June and debuted at #1 on the Rock, Folk, Country and Independent charts, while reaching #4 overall on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart. The independently released album has gone on to sell over 110,000 copies and was recently nominated for the Country Music Association’s Album of the Year. The group will take the stage at the Altria Friday, February 16th at 8:00. Update: Tickets are now sold out.

Going Places opens at the Science Museum of Virginia – Where did you go today? And how did you get there? We have developed so many modes of transportation that travel is possible like never before. Going Places is an interactive exhibition at the Science Museum of Virginia that explores the technology behind travel. Climb aboard a flight simulator to pilot a plane, ride on a hovercraft, pack a cargo ship without capsizing it, try sailing a land yacht across heavy winds, and more as you explore the incredible technology that makes the farthest reaches of our planet accessible. The exhibit opens Friday, February 16th and runs through August 19th. Tickets are available online. Exhibit is free for museum members.

WWI America opens at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture (formerly the VHS) – The newly-minted Virginia Museum of History & Culture, formerly the Virginia Historical Society, will host a new exhibit beginning this weekend, WWI America, the largest traveling exhibit of its kind exploring the Great War. The exhibit includes President Woodrow Wilson’s hat and cane, Harry Houdini’s handcuffs, baseball legend Christy Mathewson’s gas mask, and more. You’ll also learn about the infamous Zimmerman telegram, the sinking of the Lusitania, the prohibition of alcohol, and more. Admission is $10 for adults $5 for kids, and free for children under 5, active duty military members, veterans, and their families, and museum members. Get tickets online here.

Celebrate Lunar New Year the Children’s Museum of Richmond – Celebrate Lunar New Year and the Year of the Dog this Saturday at the Children’s Museum of Richmond. Enjoy performances all day beginning with the Lion Dance at 11:00AM, followed by an impressive lineup of traditional and modern Chinese performances by Pacific Arts Troupe, Richmond Chinese Folk Dance Group, Richmond Chinese Performing Art Group, and Yu Dance Arts. To continue the fun, check out the live egg roll cooking demonstration at 12:30 PM, with the chance to try an egg roll from Chen’s Chinese Restaurant. The fun kicks off at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 17th and continues through 4:00 PM. Ticket are $8. More here.
