Phifer family’s light display wins $50,000 on ABC TV show “The Great Christmas Light Fight”

The family has been lighting up a pair of adjacent homes for 43 years and took home the top prize in this nationally-televised show, which aired last night on ABC.

The Phifer family’s adjoining houses in the West End off Asbury Court near Regency Square have long been a favorite stop on Richmond’s Tacky Light Tour each holiday season–for 43 years, in fact.

As we reported earlier, the show is going on this year in honor of the Phifer family matriarch, Rose, who passed away earlier this year. ABC visited the pair of homes over the summer to film the episode, which featured three other neighboring homes from across the country as well, before crowning a winner based on who had the best lights overall, and in the case of the Phifers, the best story.

The episode was rather emotional, with Rose’s son Bobby describing how much his late mother meant to him and how much of an influence she was on his highly-illuminated holiday spirit. The family took home the $50,000 prize in the end.
