It’s prime summer festival season with the Carytown Watermelon Festival, Richmond Jazz Festival, Filipino Festival, and much more this weekend. Find something fun to do with our Weekend Event Picks!

Richmond Jazz Festival at Maymont – The Richmond Jazz Festival returns for its eighth year this weekend with an all-star lineup. Held August 5th through 10th, the festival will once again host headliners at Maymont along with several performances at smaller venues. This year’s artists include Pat Metheny, Bob James, Common, and Erykah Badu. Robert Cray, The Isley Brothers, Jazmine Sullivan and The Manhattan Transfer are also among the noteworthy acts who will be on hand to entertain the festival crowd. Admission is free to the Hardywood Park Craft Brewery and the Jazz Café at VMFA performances on Thursday, August 10th. Tickets are $30 plus fees for “Homegrown at the Hipp” at the Hippodrome Theater on Friday, August 11th. Early bird single-day passes for Saturday and Sunday, August 12th and August 13th, are $75 plus fees, and early bird weekend passes are $140 plus fees. Movies in the Park at Forest Hill Park – The very last Movies in the Park series film will be shown this Friday, August 11th. Family-friendly favorite Finding Dory is the feature this month, and will be shown at Forest Hill Park. Snacks available for purchase and the movie will start when it gets dark enough, between 8:00 and 8:30 PM. Get there early to snag a prime spot. Admission is free. Learn more at this link.

Filipino Festival at Our Lady of Lourdes Church –  The Filipino Festival returns to the West End this weekend, bringing it with it delicious food, dancing, and other cultural elements to Our Lady of Lourdes Church off Woodman Road. Now in its twelfth year, the Filipino Festival is a community event which showcases the richness of the Filipino culture and promotes a respect for and appreciation of the Filipino heritage. Featuring a delectable cuisine, folk dances and music, the Filipino Festival has attracted thousands of attendees from Richmond and surrounding cities and counties who want to experience the best of the Philippine islands without leaving Virginia. It all kicks off Friday, August 11th and runs through Saturday, August 12th. Jammin’ on the James at Wilton House Museum – Wilton House Museum in the Near West End is hosting a free evening of live music on the James River Saturday. Cover band The Adrian Duke Project will cover everyone from The Beatles and Van Morrison to Elton John and Marvin Gaye. Bring a picnic dinner and your favorite lawn chair for family-friendly music on our scenic terrace overlooking the James River. Complimentary evening tours of Wilton will be held before the concert and there will be face painting, games, and crafts for kids. Admission is free, the event is rain or shine, and music starts at 6:00 PM. More information here.

Carytown Watermelon Festival – The Carytown Watermelon Festival returns to Richmond’s Mile of Style this weekend for its 34th year this Sunday. The annual celebration of the watermelon takes place in the heart of Carytown on W. Cary Street. Expect a bevy of local food and retail vendors, food and drink specials at many of Carytown’s unique and vibrant restaurants, live music, and of course, plenty of cold, fresh watermelon sliced up and served by the bowl. It all takes place Sunday, August 13th in Carytown, W. Cary Street between Nansemond Street and N. Boulevard from 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM. Learn more here.
