University of Richmond Science Center evacuated Wednesday evening due to chemical fire

A HAZMAT crew was also called to the scene due to the nature of the fire.

There were no reported injuries after a building at the University of Richmond was evacuated due to a fire Wednesday evening, officials said. The fire broke out in the university’s Gottwald Science Center located at 35 Westhampton Way.

Upon arrival, Richmond Fire Department crews found a fire that they describe as chemical in nature on the building’s third floor. Due to the type of fire, a HAZMAT team was also dispatched.

No word on the cause of the exact cause of the fire; authorities are still investigating the incident.
