Richmond Public Schools has been selected as one of four school divisions to receive the National Education Association (NEA) Foundation’s Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Grant in the amount of $30,000. The grant funding will be used to develop training materials for Computer Science integration in partnership with CodeVA.

A portion of the funding will also pay stipends to RPS teachers involved in the project to write curriculum aligning Project GUTS 2.0: Growing Up Thinking Scientifically, with the division’s existing science curriculum and the new Virginia Standards of Learning for Computer Science. Educators have been selected to serve on the steering committee as part of planning for Project GUTS 2.0. The goal is to concentrate efforts on aligning those middle school resources to reflect and better account for the need for computer science education.

Research shows that middle school represents a critical juncture when many girls and minorities may choose to drop science, technology, engineering and math pursuits. Computer science has been found as a popular area of study that offers a potential bridge for STEM interest to cross over with female and minority students as they pass from elementary to high school years due the natural cross-curricular content. By linking creativity with language, project-based learning, critical thinking and practical applications in subjects as diverse as chemistry and the visual arts, computer science gives students a new entry point into subjects to allow for meaningful engagement in those subjects.
